10 Pest-Proofing Tips to Transition from Summer to Fall

As the temperature is getting colder, your house is getting cozier. Nothing like cuddling up with your favorite fuzzy blanket, right? But there are a few no-so-wanted guests who also think your house looks like the perfect place to hunker down for the fall. Pests.

It’s time to make sure your house is not a resort for all these critters. Fox Pest Control is here to help with some pest-proofing tips for your home this fall.

Tip #1 Make Sure Window Screens are in Good Repair

This is the time of year you can turn off the AC and enjoy some fresh, cool air. But if your window screens have holes or don’t fit tight you are also letting in some not-so-cool bugs.

Tip #2 Screen Your Vents

Every house has vents and other openings like chimneys or animal doors that can be an open invitation to pests. Make sure your vents have screens that are properly fitted and in good working order to keep rodents and bugs from getting through.

Tip #3 Seal Cracks

Pests can get into your house through the tiniest of cracks, and rodents can fit through a hole the size of a dime! Seal cracks using caulk and steel wool, especially around areas where pipes enter the home.

Tip #4 Replace Worn Weather-Stripping

Check the weather-stripping around doors and mortar around windows. If they are worn or have gaps be sure to replace them. This will not only help keep cold air out this winter, but pests as well.

Tip #5 Clean Rain Gutters

Leaves and other debris can get clogged in your rain gutters, which not only collects water where mosquitoes can breed, but also makes nice nests for other pests. Cleaning them out will send pests looking for someplace further away from your home to make a nest.

Tip #6 Trim Bushes and Trees

Mice and rats love to use branches to travel. These branches make a perfect bridge for rodents and other pests to access areas of the home higher up like the roof line. Be sure to trim branches so they are not touching your home.

Tip #7 Check For Water Leaks

All pests need water, and having leaks or puddled water is a sure way to invite them to stay. Check kitchen, bathrooms, and basement areas where water heaters, sinks, or faucets are located in your home. Make sure there are no leaks and the areas are well ventilated and dry.

Tip #8 Open Decoration Boxes Outside

If you are pulling out the fall and winter holiday decorations that are stored in the garage or shed, make sure you open them outside and check for pests. You don’t want to bring real spiders in with those decorative ones!

Tip #9 Clean Up the Yard

If pests can find places to nest in your yard they are more likely to make their way into your home, too. Remove piles and debris that pests can nest in. If you have firewood, PestWorld reminds us to be sure to store it at least 20 feet away from the house.
