National Mosquito Control Awareness Week

It’s National Mosquito Control Awareness Week. Here at Fox we are working to help spread the word about how you can protect yourself and your family from the diseases carried by mosquitoes.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) explains, “Mosquito-borne diseases are those spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Diseases that are spread to people by mosquitoes include Zika virus, West Nile virus, Chikungunya virus, dengue, and malaria.”

What Can I Do to Protect Myself from Mosquitoes?

The American Mosquito Control Association reminds us to Drain, Dress, and Defend!

Fox Pest Control Can Help!

The Latest Technology for Fighting Mosquitoes

There is some amazing technology being investigated to control mosquito infestations. It’s called Sterile Insect Techniques (SITs) and has been used since the 1950’s to control some insects. It even eradicated screwworm flies in North and Central America. The principle behind the technique is to release altered male mosquitoes that are sterile, or not able to have offspring, or produce offspring that won’t survive to adulthood when they mate. Since male mosquitoes don’t bite they don’t transmit disease, so increasing their numbers won’t be a threat to us.

This is a good option because it doesn’t get rid of mosquitoes completely, and we need them to keep the balance in our ecosystem. It also is something that won’t harm other beneficial insects. As stated at mosquito.org “These techniques specifically target invasive disease-causing mosquito species, leaving non-target species, such as bees and butterflies, unharmed.”

SITs have been tested in Brazil and are anticipated to be tested in Florida to help control the spread of diseases carried by mosquitoes. But we will still need pest control in a combined effort as we look to the future. “SITs for mosquito control can be used as part of an integrated mosquito management approach.” (CDC)
