Time to Treat for Fleas and Ticks!

April 11th is the day to express your love to the most unconditional member of your family . . . your pet.

In fact, if deep down in the depths of your empathetic heart you prefer your dog to your significant other (gasp!) you may not be alone. A study published in Society and Animals in 2017 said that one reason is that people feel more empathy toward dogs than to other adult humans. When people were shown news clips of adults or dogs under attack, they felt more empathy for the dogs than the people.

Or maybe it’s that dogs are just better than people? Charles De Gaulle said it this way, “The better I get to know men, the more I find myself loving dogs.” Either way, if your pet is winning your heart, then you are a typical human.

Think of all the fun, loyal, playful, caring moments you’ve had with your pet this National Pet Day, then call Fox Pest Control. Why? Because Fox can help your pet with their most troublesome nuisances . . . fleas and ticks!

It’s not just the itching that is bothering your pet, fleas and ticks spread illnesses that are dangerous for both them and you. Let’s look at the common diseases spread by fleas and ticks.

  • Plague
  • Murine Typhus (a flea-borne Typhus)
  • Cat scratch disease
  • Tapeworms
  • Anemia

Anemia and tapeworms are especially common in pets infested with fleas. In young animals, both can be deadly without treatment.

  • Lyme disease
  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
  • Anaplasmosis
  • Canine Ehrlichiosis

All of the diseases spread by ticks can be caught by pets as well as humans.

How to Get Rid of Fleas and Ticks

Use a flea collar. The efficiency of these is less clear, but they may help keep your pets flea-free.

Use flea and tick medication. This may not completely stop your pet from getting fleas and ticks, but it will reduce their risk of disease.
