What You Need to Know About Swarmers
Swarmers are winged termites that a well-established colony produces this time of year. If you see swarmers in or near your home it’s a sure sign a colony is close by.

These flying termites are called Alates and they have the potential to be kings or queens of new termite colonies. They don’t actually cause damage, but seeing these winged termites is a sure sign you have termites nearby. These flying termites have dark exoskeletons and two sets of long wings.

Now that the temperatures are rising, it is likely that you might see swarmers. Once the weather reaches near 70 degrees these pests come up out of their colonies to find a mate and form a new colony. They are not great fliers, and tend to get blown more than fly to their new location, which is often determined by the place their fragile wings break off. When that happens they find their mate and new colonies are formed.

Often their discarded wings near windowsills or doors is the only sign of a termite problem in your home.
Another sign you may see is a mud tube. Because most termites don’t crawl out in the open, they build mud tubes for travel.

There are around 2,000 known termite species in the world, but the Subterranean Termite can be found in every state in the continental United States and live in colonies of up to 2 million members. They are by far the most destructive termite species in the U.S.
Will Getting Rid of Swarmers Get Rid of My Problem?
No. Although Swarmers are a nuisance, having them in or around your home is not the problem. The fact that swarmers indicate a colony nearby is the real issue. You could think of swarmers like the smoke detector in your home. It’s warning you that damage could be happening. In fact, termites cause more damage than fires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, and ice storms combined. The National Pest Management Association estimates that termites cause about $5 billion in damage every year.
